Battles for New Amsterdam

On August 27, 1654,in a surprise invasion from the English on the Dutch-owned terris known as New Amsterdam, four English frigates sailed in New Amsterdam’s harbor and demanded New Netherland’s surrender. This resulted in the Second Anglo-Dutch War between England and the Dutch Republic.

In 1667, the dutch and the English both agreed to the terms of the Treaty of Breda wich, put simply, reads that the English gain New Amsterdam and the Dutch gain a small island known as Run. This island is filled with spices and particularly nutmegs. Controlling an island like that in that time was like controlling a large amount of oil exports today.

However, in the Third Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch recaptured New Netherland in August 1673 and the city was renamed New Orange. After the signing of the Treaty of Westminster in November 1674 the city returned to the English and the name went back to New York, and Suriname became an official Dutch possession in return.

Boston

Boston is one of the oldest cities in America, and the largest port city in New England. It Was founded in September 17, 1630 by a group of Puritan colonists. These colonists are often confused with the Puritans that colonized the Plymouth colony, who are often referred to as the pilgrims, but they are not the same group.

Boston was originally named Trimountaine, but it was eventually changed to be named after Boston, England, From which several of these colonists had come from. These people believed very much in a good education, and  As a result, after just five years of Boston’s founding, the first public school in America, Boston Latin, was founded in 1635, and Harvard College came the next year after that. Boston had been the largest town in America until the 1700s.

On March 5, 1770, on King street, a young man named, Edward Gerrish, called out to a British officer, john Goldfinch, and told him that he had not paid his masters bill for the making of a wig. Goldfinch ignored the boy, for he, in fact, did pay the bill. Gerrish left, only to come back with some friends. Eventually Goldfinch grew tired of the harassment and hit Gerrish over the head with his musket. The combination of the cry of pain and the arguments between the officer and Gerrish’s friends drew the attention of nearby people. Eventually the crowd became larger and more threatening. Soon soldiers were sent out to disperse the mob. By the time reinforcements arrived the size of the mob was around 300 to 400 people. The men were told not to fire, but the crowd was taunting the soldiers. After a short pause some soldiers fired there weapons do to annoyance and aggravation. 4 men were killed instantly, 5 died afterwards, and 6 were wounded. However, I have heard that possibly 11 men died, and 6 were wounded. All soldiers that fired a shot were shot as punishment.

After the American revolution, and the Boston massacre, Boston Became one of the wealthiest trading ports in America. In 1822, Boston was officially chartered as a city, and by the mid-1800′s was one of largest industrial areas in the United states. In the early 20th century, Boston was in decline because the factories were old, and businesses were moving out of state for cheaper work elsewhere. In response, Boston launched ‘urban renewal’ projects under the direction of the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA), which was established in 1957. The BRA began projects all over the west end in 1958. Large projects of demolition and renovation took place for many years.

After 30 year of economic downturn, there was a sudden boom in 1970. There were also many new medical health innovations that took place in hospitals such as Massachusetts General Hospital. Schools such as Harvard University, Boston University, and M.I.T. attracted quite a few students to Boston, and by the 21st century, Boston was considered the intellectual, technological, and the political center of our nation.

Boston is also known as the 4th most densely populated city in the country. Its current population (2009) in 89.6 sqr. miles is over 600,000. On average, the temperature would register near a high of 82°F in July, and in average high of 36°F in January. the lowest ever recorded was -18°F, the highest ever being 104°F. Once in an amazingly hot year, temperatures in February managed to reach 70°F, and 89°F in march.

My dad is from this area(not particularly Boston, but a town about an hour from Boston), so I’m pretty familiar with the “Boston accent”. People in this area tend to use words you might not be too sure what they mean. For example, I’ve heard the word ‘whicked’ used in place of ‘very’ many times before, and my dad uses the word ‘elastic’ for ‘rubberband’ (that might be just him though). They also drop there ‘r’ at times too unless a vowel is present afterward. for example ‘dark’ may be pronounced ‘daak’ and ‘car’ is to ‘caa’. ‘Carrot’ would stay ‘carrot’.

Boston is well known as a safe city for its low crime rate. For example a typical murder rate in a year could be around the 30′s. However this number can fluctuate by as much as 50%, climbing all the way to the 60′s then dropping to the 30′s again. In 1990 the highest count of murders was 152, but in 1999 this number went down to 31. it went up to 60 in 2002, down to 39 in 2003, up again in 64 in 2004,  and up slightly more to 75 in 2005.

Now what kind of person would I be if I didn’t mention the Boston Red Sox? This team is home to Fenway Park, which is the oldest stadium still active, it also held the first modern world series in 1903 which they won. They also won in 1912(the same year that the park that is here today opened), 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, and 2007.  Now moving on from baseball to football, the New England patriots, originally founded as the Boston Patriots in 1960,was chartered into the AFL the same year, and later to the NFL in 1970. they became the New England Patriots in 1971. The one three super bowls all together(XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX), two of wich are consecutive. They are one of only three teams to ever have an 18-0 winning streak in one season.

Jamestown colony

jamestownislandJamestown was named after king James I of England, and was founded on May 24, 1607. It is located in Virginia, and although it is the first permanent settlement it wasn’t the first attempt. Jamestown was actually something around the 19th attempt of colonization in the new world. Jamestown’s primary reasons were to gather Tobacco, as well as wood, money, women who wanted a husband, and other reasons as well.

Late in 1606, three ships set sail for the new world to explore the land for the perfect settlement area. They came across a river on there search and named it the James River after there current holder of the throne. After exploring the land, King James decided the best spot for the settlement was on an island in the middle of the river, now known as Jamestown Island. The spot was a good defensible area, but it was a swampy, marsh like island with many, many mosquitoes.

The first group of settlers of the colony were extremely lazy. They were used to the luxury of a servant, that is until Captain John Smith told them that if they don’t start working they will lose the privilege to eat for the day they did not work. It it believed that their was no known way of purifying the water in the early years of Jamestown, so many of the settlers died of disease and sickness.

Jumping ahead to 1613, six years after Jamestown’s founding, they started spreading farmland into the natives territories, straining there relationship. In 1614, John Rolfe (the leader of the settlement managed to grow tobacco, became very wealthy, and married Pocahontas, easing tensions between the two people, and there was a since of peace for a time.

Unfortunately, by the end of 1616, Pocahontas became sick and died, which raised up tension between the English and natives once again. By 1622, this tension became so strong it snapped, and the chief of this current time decided it was time to get rid of the settlement once and for all. On the morning of march 22, in what is known as the Indian Massacre of 1622, the Indians killed off over 300 men and women, Jamestown survived only because of an early warning.(many believe this is the reason for the disappearance of the ‘lost colony’ of Roanoke)

Another attack occurred in 1644 as well, resulting in the capturing and murder of the Chief.

Jumping ahead yet again to 1676, Jamestown was burned, and eventually rebuilt. then in 1698, the state house burned, accidentally this time, but instead of rebuilding it they simply had it moved to Middle plantation in 1699.

The town(middle plantation) was soon renamed Williamsburg to honor the new reining king, King William III.

Jamestown is now over 400 yrs old , and will probably be along for quite a few more years.

the roanoke colony

This was a settlement that was established by Sir Walter Raleigh in the late 16th century. The location for the settlement was somewhere on the outer banks of modern day, North Carolina. In the following spring of 1585, a group of men came to establish the settlement. The leader, Sir Richard Grenville, further explored the area, established the colony, and return to England with the news of success. Grenville left 75 men to further establish the colony with the promise to return in April, 1586 with more men and fresh supplies. When he did return with the new men, he found the settlement abandoned.

in 1587, Raleigh sent out another group of people to try a second attempt to colonize the area. These 117 colonists landed on Roanoke Island on July 22, 1587. On August 18, the first English child was born into the Americas. The newest leader of the colny at this time was John white, believes that the birth of a child in the new world was a promising event for the future, and decides to leave the colony to prosper by itself, and heads back to Spain. He returns three years later on august 18, 1890, and found the entire settlement once again deserted. The only clue found was ‘croatoan’ carved into a nearby post and ‘Cro’ carved into a tree.

the name Croatoan belonged to the tribe that lived in the area and they were not the best of friens with the colonists. many people would say that the indians are skilled hunters and could have easily taken out the colonists, others might say that the two might have merdged together and set aside aside their differences, but no one really knows for sure what happened and so it has earned the settlement the nickname ‘the lost colony’.

St. Patrick (???-460 AD)

St. Patrick was born in modern day Britian though i do not know when. He wasn’t always a christian, even though his parents had hoped otherwise. when Patric was around 15 or 16, he was captured by pirates and would be sold as a slave.he was there for 6 years until he escaped and went home to his family.a while later he went to france to prepare as a missionary. when he was ready he went to Ireland as a missionary, and planted over 300 churches and baptized near 120,000 people. he also was very helpful in explainig the trinity, as a shamrock(three leaves yet one plant).he died at 460 AD.

St. Augustine (354-420 AD)

St. Augustine was born in modern day Algeria in 350 AD. By 375, he devoted his life to finding divine wisdom, and in 384, he became the imperial rhetoriciAn in Milan. Coming here he found that by watching Ambrose there was something to learn even in things he did’t believe. So he started going to church on Sunday, but it was strictly to study his ability to capture you in the way he preaches. In 387 he was converted to Christianity, and baptized sometime later. By 391 he became the bishop of Hippo. Augustine battled many heresies and hereitcs such as Pelagians who believe that salvation is by the works of man, not Jesus. Augustine simply argues that no man can do well unless God led him to it.

Councils of Carthage (397 and 419 AD)

The councils tell how many books are in the bible. These are the books we have today. The reason for the councils is because people tried lying to everyone by writing and creating false books. Ever heard of the ‘National Geographic Channel special on the Book of Judas’? they said it was authentic but what that means is that it was made inside the time during the writing of the bible. what it doesn’t mean is that it is a real book of the Bible. The problem with this special is that 1: alot of books and letters were written at this time and 2: It contridicts what the bible says. The book was actually probably written by a cult to trick christians out of their belief. Many people were creating these fake books which is the reason for these councils, so anything with a different name than the books that are in the bible

Ambrose (338-397 AD)

Ambrose was governor of Milan before he was bishop. He was born in 338 in Trier, Gaul. Ambrose had a particularly large problem with Aryanism which spread pretty easily. He is not only famous for fighting Aryanism, but his amazing speaking skills. He was able to capture and keep your attention very well. Ambrose was made a saint by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. he died april/04/397AD in Milan, Italy.

Athanasius of Alexandria (362 AD)

Athanasius was the bishop of Alexandria. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 293 AD where he lived for the rest of his life. He was a great bishop at his time and was at that time Fighting Aryanism which taught that Jesus has no diety, which at this time was one of the bigger problems with the Holy Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. It has been and probably will be mentioned many more times later on. Now Athanasius was persecuted many times. He was almost always on the run. During these times he would write letters to the church of Alexandria to give instruction, and wrote some books as well. Yet despite all this persecution he eventually died of old age, surrounded by friends and loved ones, in 373 AD.AD in Alexandria, Egypt.

Constantine (272-337 AD)

Constantine was born to Helena and Constantius Florius as Flavius Valerius Constantinius in the city of Naissus in 02/27/272 AD. His father soon was appointed ruler of the east by maximian.

Eventually his father left the throne and Constantine was quickly named Emperor. Maxentius was jealous and forced an imperial guard to appoint him emperor of the west. He rebelled and wanted to take over the east and it came down to a war against the east and the west. Constantine before the battle had a vision with the Christian sign. The dream said “in this you will conquer” and so he had his entire army draw the sign on their shields. Constantine rode into battle his armor gleaming ready to attack, And he destroyed the the army of the west, joining the east and west Kingdoms. He died as a Constantine the Great in May 22nd 337
